The development of the instrument transformer started in the early 1950s, when the instrument transformer was only made by copying the prototype and materials, with few types, simple layout and no series. From the end of 1970s to the beginning of 1980s, three major occupational quality inspections were carried out for the transformer profession, and the quality inspection was carried out for the manufacturing companies of the transformer profession in batches, which improved the commodity quality and management level of each company.

In the 1990s, after China's transformer manufacturing industry formed the planned number, in view of the continuous progress of the specification and the quality problems in the production and operation of the commodities, it was particularly important to carry out scientific research in a targeted way. After the 1990s, the new generation of photoelectric transformers led to attention. Many manufacturers and colleges and universities have successively researched and developed photoelectric transformers, and some have also been put into trial operation. However, due to the poor function and instability of domestic components, the plan was temporarily drafted from scratch.

In 2000, the digitization, optical fiber, intelligence and integration of instrument transformers will become the first development direction.

At present, the low impedance transformer (LOP0) with new principle and layout is being developed internationally. Its layout is simple, commodity volume is small, function is stable, and cost is low. It is expected to become a new type of transformer in the near future, and will also play a certain role in promoting the development of power system. In conclusion, recalling more than 40 years of development history of instrument transformers in China, it can be said that the domestic instrument transformer profession has taken a leading position in the world after several years of development.

The transformer level and accuracy level have been greatly improved, and many special transformers have also been developed, such as voltage and current composite transformers, DC current transformers, high accuracy current ratios and voltage ratios, high current laser current transformers, electronic circuit compensation transformers, photoelectric transformers in ultra-high voltage systems, and voltage and current transformers in SF6 totally enclosed composite electrical appliances (GIS).
